“The people who get ahead are those who innovate, the ones who blaze new trails, not the ones who repeat old ways of doing things. The people who get ahead welcome new ideas: They listen; they adapt; they are constantly learning and challenging themselves.”—Selena Soo
2012 was okay but I think 2013 can be a lot better. I think this year I'll go for creative broke!
To 'go for broke' means to take a risk in the hope of a favorable outcome. When applied to any career, it means to work your creative ass off and to do what it takes to make it all happen. This means sacrificing sleep or a clean house including a very busy overworked coffee maker!
Going for broke can be seen as a gamble to some. My thinking is this: I could gamble on my own career OR I could gamble away my time, energy and efforts working for someone else helping them build their dream.
Who knows you best?
You know you can always count on yourself to work hardest for you. We take risks everyday. We take risks when throw out our ideas online or to our clients. We face rejection, highs, lows and those annoying chirping sounds when we think no one is noticing.
As an Illustrator, I know my hours because I created them! I know my habits and my routine because I created them. I know what I'm good at with an understanding of my skills- it comes naturally! I have a handle on my strengths and my weaknesses. I self-direct myself every single day. It's part of the illustration career gig that I signed up for!
The Big Reminder Here
"Creativity takes courage." -Henri Matisse
The Focus this year will involve:
• Taking advantage of all my available resources or creating them.
• Using the available supplies I already have that are in my office!
• Making time to learn new skills.
• Finding new ways to combat the usual obstacles I face day to day.
• Spending more time doing and producing work than being online.
• Really focusing on where my best ideas come from and when.
• Focusing on increasing income and not just income potential.
So if going for broke is not about being reckless and I'm already committed to the process, then there is nothing to lose. All my productive effort, my energy, my time plus resources will be worth it.
The first thing on my list is my website! I'll keep you posted on the redesign.
